Schellas Hyndman needed just two years to lead FC Dallas to its only appearance in the MLS Cup.

The former college coach didn’t win another playoff game, though. And now he’s stepping side after missing the postseason for two straight years.

Hyndman said Friday he made the decision after “a lot of thought and consideration.”

After losing to Colorado in the 2010 MLS Cup, FC Dallas was knocked out in the first round of the playoffs in 2011 and was recently eliminated from postseason contention for the second straight year.

Hyndman’s final home game will be Saturday against Seattle. FC Dallas ends the season Oct. 26 at San Jose.

The 63-year-old Hyndman is 62-57-58 in five seasons. He spent 31 years as a college head coach, including 24 at nearby SMU.

“Having had the pleasure of knowing him for the last 30 years, I have seen firsthand his commitment to his craft and the passion he has for the game,” said FC Dallas Chairman Clark Hunt, who holds the same title with the NFL’s Kansas City Chiefs. “We wish him well in the next chapter of his life, and he will be missed.”

Hyndman made the NCAA playoffs in 30 of 31 seasons at Eastern Illinois and SMU. The Mustangs made two trips to the College Cup – soccer’s version of the Final Four – under Hyndman. He is fifth all-time among Division I coaches with a record of 466-122-49.

After taking over at FC Dallas midseason in 2008, Hyndman missed the playoffs his first full year. In 2010, FC Dallas beat Real Salt Lake and Los Angeles in the playoffs before falling to Colorado 2-1 in overtime in the title match.
