Denton overcame a 10-point deficit to storm back over White Settlement Brewer on Friday night for a 51-16 win at Brewer Bear Stadium.
It was the first district win for Denton (3-4, 1-3) in District 5-4A.
Denton’s defense helped turn the tide for the Broncos. After Brewer (3-4, 0-4) scored a touchdown and a field goal on its first two possessions, Denton’s offense came alive with key plays sparked by quarterback Christian Rodriquez.
The Denton defense held the Bears out of the end zone the remainder of the half. Brewer missed an opportunity for points when a 28-yard field goal attempt went wide just before halftime.
The Broncos’ defense put points on the board when Michael Husbands picked off Chris Gibson and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown, extending Denton’s lead to 37-10.
Late in the third quarter, the Bears’ Jameson Carter scored from 4 yards out to put Brewer within 37-16 of Denton. The TD was set up by a Gibson-to-Cole Wallis 19-yard pass. Carter led Brewer in rushing with 75 yards on 13 carries.
But Denton’s offense inflicted its share of damage on the Bears. Xavier Scott scored twice for the Broncos, and Deandre Colemen led Denton in rushing with 73 yards on nine carries.
Adarian Harris caught a touchdown pass for Denton, and Deontrae Murray followed with a 9-yard TD run to finish the scoring.
