WICHITA FALLS — Trophy Club Nelson stopped two Wichita Falls possessions inside the Bobcats’ 30 in the final 14 minutes, and a field goal by Parker McCabe made the difference in a 17-14 Bobcats victory Thursday night at Memorial Stadium.
The Bobcats (5-2, 2-2 District 5-4A) outgained the Coyotes (4-3, 3-1) by nearly 200 yards, 298 to 105. Nelson held Wichita Falls to 9 total yards in the first half.
But the Bobcats’ defense came up with consecutive fumble recoveries early on and turned both into touchdowns. Courtney Miles converted the first takeaway into an 11-yard touchdown run, and Nelson quickly added to that lead with a 2-yard TD reception by Gage Vines that followed a Coyotes fumble at the Wichita Falls 25-yard line.
Nelson converted a Skyler Reneau fumble recovery in the third quarter into three big points as McCabe split the uprights from 32 yards out for a 17-7 lead with 9:06 left in the game.
Wichita Falls scored its second TD after Nelson fumbled a punt less than two minutes later, and the Coyotes recovered a fumble with 6:25 remaining. But Chance McWhorter’s 48-yard field-goal attempt missed wide left, and Nelson was able to run out the last 4:33 on the clock.
