Josh Freeman was named the latest starting quarterback for the scuffling Minnesota Vikings on Wednesday. Freeman’s second week with the team will culminate on Monday night with him leading the offense against the winless New York Giants.

“Any time you step into a situation where you’re the new guy, there’s always kind of an awkward getting-to-know-you phase,” Freeman said. “But I think that goes back to the character of this organization just from top to bottom: a lot of quality people that are dedicated to winning.”

Coach Leslie Frazier also said that Colleyville Heritage graduate Christian Ponder will be the backup, not Matt Cassel, assuming Freeman makes it through the week without problems.

Freeman will be the third starter in the last four games for the Vikings (1-4). He was cut by Tampa Bay on Oct. 3.

Briefly

• Eagles: Quarterback Michael Vick sounded discouraged talking about his hamstring injury with CSN Philly. “I want to get back out there, but I can’t,” Vick said. “It’s worse than what I thought it was going to be. It’s just slow. It’s taking longer than I thought it would.” Vick, whose Eagles host the Cowboys on Sunday, has played a full 16-game schedule once since joining the league in 2001.

• Patriots: Linebacker Jerod Mayo was put on injured reserve, ending his season after tearing his right pectoral muscle in Sunday’s win over the Saints. Mayo has led the Patriots in tackles the past five seasons.

• Lions: Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh was fined $31,500 for putting his helmet into the chest of Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden. The fine was Suh’s second this season and brings his total fines to $209,000 in four seasons.

• Texans: Safety Danieal Manning was put on season-ending injured reserve with a fractured right fibula. Quarterback Matt Schaub did not practice.

• Titans: Quarterback Jake Locker practiced with the team for the first time since injuring his hip and right knee against the Jets on Sept. 29. Locker was wearing a knee brace and moving with a limp, according to the Tennessean. Running back Shonn Greene also practiced after missing five games with a knee injury.

• Buccaneers: Guard Carl Nicks had surgery hoping to clear a staph infection in his left foot. Nicks and teammate Lawrence Tynes were first diagnosed with MRSA in August. ... Former TCU receiver Skye Dawson was signed off the practice squad.

• Aaron Hernandez: The NFLPA filed two grievances against the New England Patriots that would allow former tight end Aaron Hernandez to collect $6.21 million worth of guarantees he’s scheduled to earn this season and in 2014. Hernandez is charged with first-degree murder.

• Bengals: Quarterback Andy Dalton was AFC offensive player of the week after going 26 of 40 for 337 yards and three touchdowns against the Bills.

• Giants: Running back Peyton Hillis, who rushed for 309 yards last season with the Chiefs, signed as an option behind Brandon Jacobs, who is nursing a hamstring injury.

• 49ers: Guard Alex Boone was fined $7,875 for retaliating against Cardinals defensive tackle Alameda Ta’amu, who appeared to step on Boone’s face mask during a play.
