A 65-year-old woman died in an early morning accident when her pickup went off a Loop 820 bridge and fell to the ground below.

Janice Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:59 a.m.

The accident was reported about 6:18 a.m. as the 2007 red Chevrolet pickup, traveling northbound in the 1200 block of East Loop 820, went over the Trinity River bridge between Randol Mill Road and Trinity Boulevard.

Police said the pickup was northbound in the left lane. As it went across the Trinity River bridge, it went out of control and veered to the left. The pickup then crashed into the guardrail and moved along the railing. A section of the pickup was caught under the vehicle and it "pole-vaulted" off the bridge and down into the riverbed, police said.

The accident caused significant backups as the freeway was closed afterward. By 10 a.m., all lanes had been reopened, said Fort Worth police spokeswoman Sharron Neal. The pickup landed on the ground near the Trinity River but did not go into the water.

When the accident occurred, it was dark and raining. Investigators believe that weather played a role in the accident.
