We go perfect with picks, but this period poses a pickle

Well, that’s better.

Admittedly, the picks section has had its ups and downs because of some games that really didn’t turn out the way we would have expected. The first one that comes to mind is Keller Central over Keller. The second one was Duncanville over Colleyville Heritage.

The second weekend of October yielded perfection, as we went 7-0. But there were some moments on Friday night that made me go hmmm. To see Justin Northwest trail at Haltom in the third quarter told me the Texans had not gotten over the loss to Keller Fossil Ridge and were maybe looking ahead to this Friday’s game with Carroll. Speaking of Carroll, the Dragons’ early struggles with Richland made you think, “Why is this happening?” No matter, the Dragons pulled away.

So on to another week. With the perfect week, we improved to 34-9.

Let’s see if we can secure a repeat. These matchups are a little tougher to judge.

Colleyville Heritage (4-2, 2-1) at Irving (4-2, 2-1), 7 p.m. Thursday, Irving Schools Stadium, Irving: If you judged the Panthers only on box scores, you’d scratch your head at how this team is 4-2 (remember, Denton Guyer forfeited its win). The numbers aren’t pretty. Irving is putting together something pretty solid and the Tigers seem to have a bead on the playoffs. This is a really tough call.

Prediction: Colleyville Heritage 21, Irving 20

Haltom (3-3, 1-2) at Keller (3-3, 0-3), 7 p.m. Thursday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: I was surprised how well Haltom ran the ball against Northwest last Friday. The Buffalos are pretty proud of that part of their game. I don’t even know what to think of Keller now, because the Indians have fallen so far so fast. That said, Haltom’s defense isn’t Keller Fossil Ridge’s defense. The Indians stop the bleeding.

Prediction: Keller 25, Haltom 19

Keller Timber Creek (1-5, 0-3) at Richland (2-4, 1-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday, Birdville Fine Arts & Athletic Complex, North Richland Hills: Another head-scratcher. There really isn’t a lot of difference between these two teams. Brandon Maine is a solid quarterback for the Rebels. Knowing the Falcons’ scoring troubles, I might kick myself, but I’m giving them another chance.

Prediction: Keller Timber Creek 19, Richland 16

Southlake Carroll (5-1, 3-0) at Justin Northwest (5-1, 2-1), 7:30 p.m. Friday, Northwest ISD Complex, Justin: This game has been circled since last year for the Texans. But the buildup took a hit two weeks ago, when Northwest got popped by Keller Fossil Ridge. For Northwest to stay in this, the Texans have to play perfectly.

Prediction: Carroll 49, Northwest 17

Keller Central (3-3, 2-1) vs. Keller Fossil Ridge (5-1, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday, Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Keller: Right now, the Panthers are really rolling and playing their best football. Quarterback Jacob Gnacinski has great control of the offense and the defense is flying to the football. It has forced nine turnovers in the first three District 4-5A games. As long as Fossil Ridge doesn’t fall into Central’s trap of making you grind, Fossil Ridge should be fine.

Prediction: Keller Fossil Ridge 40, Keller Central 17

Carrollton R.L. Turner (0-6, 0-3) at Grapevine (0-6, 0-3); 7:30 p.m. Friday, Mustang-Panther Stadium, Grapevine: It’s been a long season for both of these teams. But this is the chance for the Mustangs to finally get on the left side of the record and earn a 6-5A win. This will be a struggle, but Dave Henigan’s kids get a chance to smile.

Prediction: Grapevine 17, Carrollton R.L. Turner 14

Byron Nelson (4-2, 1-2) at Wichita Falls (3-3, 3-0); 7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Wichita Falls: This is Nelson’s only trip to the Red River area. These district records are deceiving, because the Bobcats just got through the 5-4A hierarchy of Wichita Falls Rider, Lake Dallas and Denton Guyer. Old High hasn’t played any of them. Playing in the weirdness that is Wichita Falls can never be discounted. It’s a pivotal game for the Bobcats, because if they are the playoff team they think they are, they have to find a way and beat teams they are better than. They are better than Wichita Falls.

Prediction: Nelson 33, Wichita Falls 22
