UT Arlington lost to Arkansas State 25-23, 17-25, 27-25, 13-25, 15-13 at College Park Center in a Sun Belt Conference match. UTA (11-9, 4-3) was led by senior middle blocker Charmaine Whitmore (11 kills, 13 total blocks) and Shelby Dickson (19 kills, 10 digs).

Kiffin interview

Former Southern California football coach Lane Kiffin, fired two weeks agao after a loss to Arizona State, said on ESPN’s College GameDay show Saturday morning that he has made mistakes at each of his previous coaching stops, and that he understood athletic director Pat Haden had a difficult decision to make, reported.

They were Kiffin’s first public comments since he was fired.

Kiffin was asked about his 4-7 record over his last 11 games,.

“Obviously I’m to blame being the head coach,” he said. “There are a lot of things I should’ve done better. At the same time, I’m very proud of our time there. If you look at what sanctions do to major programs like an Alabama, to be 28-15, there’s some good stuff in there, and there are some great kids that are still playing really hard.”

•  TCU baseball: Freshman Tyler Alexander from Southlake Carroll is the probable starting pitcher as the Frogs play Division I newcomer Abilene Christian at 1 p.m. today in a fall-practice game at Lupton Stadium. Admission is free.

•  Arizona baseball: Coach Andy Lopez was released from a hospital Friday, four days after having triple bypass surgery. The 59-year-old Lopez will return to coaching after he’s cleared by doctors.

• Louisville basketball: Junior guard Kevin Ware, still recovering from his horrific leg injury sustained during last year’s NCAA Tournament, hopes to be ready for the defending Cardinals’ opener Nov 9 against College of Charleston. Ware has yet to practice. “I feel good,” Ware said Saturday in his first appearance with the media since Louisville’s win over Michigan in Atlanta in April. “I’m just ready for Nov. 9, honestly. I’m ready for the opener.”
