While leafing through photographer Lisa S. Johnson’s 108 Rock Star Guitars, a coffee-table tribute to rock deities and their six-stringed instruments, readers might find themselves wondering: Why 108, instead of more conventional alternatives, like 100 or 101? Because 108 is a “sacred number” to Hindus, Buddhists and math geeks, Johnson explains in the book. She’s into the mysticism of 108.

She’s also into glamour shots of guitars wielded by such greats as Bruce Springsteen, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page. The rockers aren’t pictured, mind you — only their guitars. But by focusing on the equipment, Johnson showcases the flourishes and flaws of each instrument — and provides insight into its owner. Other featured guitars, from every generation of rock, include ones owned by Eric Clapton, Robby Krieger, Jeff Beck, Joe Walsh, Dave Navarro and Jack White.

Alas, 108 isn’t enough. We need Volume 2 immediately, for Chuck Berry, Pete Townshend, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Mike McCready, Dan Auerbach and so many more.
