BURLESON — Waco overcame a kicking error that gave away its lead late in the fourth quarter as Phillip Roper scored on a 20-yard touchdown run with 3:07 left Friday to defeat Burleson 30-26 at Burleson Stadium.
Burleson (1-4, 0-2 District 8-4A) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a 26-23 lead when a kickoff that was returned to the spot of the kick led five plays later to a 3-yard TD run by Ayinde Alaajiy with 5:50 left.
Waco (3-2, 1-1) answered with Roper’s TD and stifled Burleson’s last threat. Roper had 102 yards on 17 carries and quarterback Derrick Scott had 129 yards on 21 carries, scoring on a 1-yard run to give Waco a 16-6 lead with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.
Burleson sophomore Preston Paden stepped in at quarterback and engineered a comeback. He scored on a 17-yard run to narrow Waco’s lead to 16-13 with 9:02 left and found Austin Murrell on a 16-yard TD pass to trim the deficit to 23-20.
Alexis Arranaga’s 35-yard field goal with 8:04 left in the third quarter stretched Waco’s lead to 10-6.
Burleson’s Rodney Nickerson broke up a pass and later blocked a field goal on Waco’s opening drive of the game. A 59-yard return by Angel Espinoza set up a 1-yard Alaajiy TD run.
