NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Richland’s defense limited Haltom to only 103 yards, while the Richland offense scored three times in a 6:43 span to beat its Birdville ISD rival 28-7 in a District 4-5A game at the BISD Fine Arts/Athletic Complex.
The Rebels (2-3, 1-1) were led by quarterback Brandon Maine, who threw for 228 yards and two scores as he completed 12 of 19 passes. He also added 39 yards and one score on the ground.
Running back C.J. Hicks added 90 yards and one score for an offense that finished with 404 total yards.
Haltom (3-2, 1-1) never could get its offense going. The Buffalos’ only points came after an interception by Corderius Cooksey at the Richland 13-yard line. Four plays later, Clifton Hardin scored from 6 yards out to make it 21-7 with 2:59 left in the third quarter.
Richland responded with a 13-play, 82-yard drive capped by Maine’s 1-yard keeper on fourth-and-goal with 8:38 left in the game.
Richland scored on its first three drives to open a 21-0 lead at intermission.
During the first quarter, the Rebels held a 209-9 advantage in total yards. After a three-and-out for Haltom, Richland took over at its own 43-yard line. Nine plays later, Hicks ran in from 7 yards out for the early lead.
Their second scoring drive took only two plays as Maine hit Adrien Itoka from 90 yards out. The two would hook up again on the first play of the second quarter, this time from 25 yards out for a 21-0 lead. Overall, Itoka caught five balls for 138 yards and two scores.
