WACO — DeMarcus Williams ran for 189 yards and three touchdowns and threw for another score as Burleson Centennial defeated Waco University 42-14 in a District 8-4A game at Waco ISD Athletic Complex.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Spartans (1-4, 1-1) and was their first district win ever over a team not from Johnson County.
Williams, a senior, scored on runs of 1, 6 and 2 yards. He had nine carries of 10 yards or more, including runs of 33 and 35 yards. The Spartans’ final score came when Williams hit Davonte Sanders for a 55-yard score off a halfback pass.
Centennial led 21-7 at halftime. Thanks to Williams’ two touchdown runs and his scoring toss, the Spartans outscored University (1-4, 1-1) 21-7 in the second half.
The Trojans’ lone score in the second half came on Elijah Smith’s 23-yard run to cut the lead to 28-14. University was haunted by two fumbles and an interception.
On the second play from scrimmage, Centennial scored when Brady Allen hit Joey Swayne down the middle for a 77-yard score.
Centennial later went on an eight-play, 71-yard drive to take a 14-0 lead on Williams’ first TD.
An interception by Tavis Brown set up the Spartans’ final score in the first half.
