On a night when defense was nearly nonexistent, Fort Worth Eastern Hills safety Reuben Davenport came up with the play of the game with no time on the clock.
Davenport knocked down a potential touchdown pass at the goal line to preserve a 54-47 District 6-4A win for the Highlanders over Saginaw Chisholm Trail on Thursday night at Scarbrough-Handley Field.
The Rangers (3-3, 2-2) had a chance to win thanks to the play of quarterback Shawn Robinson on the final drive.
Robinson completed three consecutive passes to move the Rangers from the Rangers’ 40 to the Eastern Hills 25 in 19 seconds.
After a completion, Robinson’s pass to Trevor Roberts in the end zone with 2 seconds to play was deflected by Davenport.
Eastern Hills (2-3, 2-1) took the lead by converting a fourth-and-goal from the Rangers’ 5 with 36 seconds to play. Quarterback Ant-wjuan Strahan hit Vanquez Harris for a 5-yard score that erased a 47-46 Rangers lead. Marcus Baisy ran for the 2-point conversion to give the Highlanders a 54-47 advantage.
The Highlanders ran the ball 11 times for 52 yards and overcame two holding penalties. They converted a fourth-and-1 and also a second-and-13. The Rangers helped things along with a late hit that moved the ball to the Rangers 9.
