Epic Cones is a cool food truck idea: pizza or cheesesteaks in an ice cream cone.But is it a cool restaurant idea?Southwest Arlington is the test. After settling into an old convenience store-chicken stand, Epic Cones is serving lunch or dinner by the cone.Owner Chris Martinez made some “best of” lists for his first store in Deep Ellum.Now, he has bought a Valero location and will serve cones and run trucks from an obscure corner at Interstate 20 and Kelly-Burnett Road.First of all, here’s what you need to know about Epic Cones:Basically, the cones taste like pizza rolled up. But the flavors go beyond pizza.For example, there’s a barbecue-brisket-and-cheese cone, or a Philly cheesesteak cone. He says the pesto chicken cone is popular, and he also has veggie frittata cones and burger or hot dog cones.Desserts — less unusual — include a chocolate mousse cone.He’s been selling the cones for $5 as an introductory special in Arlington.“We’ve had great success in Dallas, but we wanted to get our own place and have a central location to base our food trucks,” Martinez said.He plans to run his Epic Cones scooter up and down Collins or Cooper streets, bringing sausage-and-egg cones or meat-lovers pizza-in-a-cone to a corner near you. He also sees the cones as perfect convenience-store food, sort of a more circusy version of hot dogs or burritos.“It’s perfect for somebody on the go,” he said. “It’s easy to buy, easy to walk with, easy to eat in the car.”(Think of them as open-top burritos.)He’s also upgrading the neighboring convenience store, improving the coffees and selling fresh-brewed, flavored iced teas.Epic Cones is open weekdays and Saturdays at 4331 Kelly Elliott Road, 682-587-4484, epiccones.net.Pappas at 30The Fort Worth location isn’t this old, but Pappasito’s Cantina is celebrating 30 years this week.The Houston-based chain owned by the Pappas family will serve specials all month: half-price large fajitas through Saturday, half-price happy-hour appetizers with any drink next week.Pappasito’s will have specials all month.
