1The Waters effect

This is the first game where Brian Waters is expected to not only start, but play the whole game. The Cowboys believe he is a big reason for their overall improvement in the middle of the line. Now it’s time to see how the 36-year-old holds up series after series.

2The tight ends

Normally, it’s enough to watch Jason Witten ply his craft. In this game, it’s two of the three active tight ends and two of the top eight or 10 of all time. Witten relies on precision, size and strength. Gates is about precision, athleticism and speed. A treat for fans of the position.

3Turnover drought

After that six-takeaway outburst in Week 1, it’s been a pretty quiet two weeks for the defense in that department. The Cowboys had only one takeaway against the Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Rams. One interception last week was called back. But the turnover margin is down to plus-3.

4In the slot

Miles Austin is probably going to miss the game because of hamstring injuries. The Cowboys can replace Austin on the outside with Terrance Williams, but when they go to three receivers, it will be up to Dwayne Harris and Cole Beasley to fill Austin’s shoes.

5Tony Romo’s passes

Not where they go, necessarily. How many. He threw 24 last week and won. In fact, the past eight times he’s thrown 29 passes or fewer, the Cowboys have won. The Cowboys have a newfound confidence in their running game after last week. If it works again, they can keep Romo under 30 attempts. — Carlos Mendez
