MANSFIELD — Mansfield Summit outlasted Waxahachie 38-34 in an offensive slugfest that featured 964 yards of total offense in the District 15-4A opener for both teams Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
Jordan Hester rushed for 159 yards and a touchdown on just 14 carries for Summit (1-3, 1-0) while quarterback Braden Nolen passed for 287 yards. Burrell Taylor caught four passes for 122 yards.
Waxahachie (1-2, 0-1) featured the one-two punch of running back Trevon Smith and quarterback Avery Jackson. Smith rushed for 238 yards and three touchdowns while Jackson rushed for 117 and passed for another 124.
The first six minutes of the third quarter featured two touchdowns by both teams, two fumbles, an interception and a 75-yard kickoff return. In that span, Waxahachie’s Smith scored on runs of 63 and 45 yards.
In the third quarter alone, Smith carried the ball seven times for 171 yards and two touchdowns.
Summit’s Isaiah Barnett shined on both sides of the ball. He had a 10-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter and then scored on a 2-yard run and intercepted a pass on the Jaguars’ 3-yard line in the third quarter. He also caught a 53-yard pass in the fourth.
Waxahachie got on the scoreboard on the first play of the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run by Smith. The Indians produced a big play later in the quarter when Jackson rushed for a 60-yard touchdown, but they trailed 24-13 at halftime.
