JUSTIN — Trophy Club Nelson’s fast start to the season ran into a roadblock Friday night.
Behind 207 yards passing and three touchdown throws from quarterback Chase London, Wichita Falls Rider opened District 5-4A play with a 32-22 win over the Nelson Bobcats at Northwest ISD Stadium.
The loss broke Nelson’s season-opening three-game win streak.
“The kids played hard, I’ll give them that,” Nelson coach Brian Polk said. “But we made too many mistakes, a couple of offside penalties on interceptions and just some boneheaded stuff that we can’t do in this district.”
Rider (3-1, 1-0), capitalized on two interceptions negated by penalties to register 14 points and fend off a furious final rally by the Bobcats.
Nelson (3-1, 0-1) had only four first downs in the first half before turning on the jets to account for 228 yards for the game and 18 total first downs.
Rider’s fourth-quarter scoring drive helped prove the difference.
London led the Raiders 72 yards in eight plays, capped by a 43-yard scoring connection with Davon Allison.
Luis Trejo added the game-clinching 21-yard field goal with 27 seconds remaining.
