RED OAK — The Red Oak Hawks survived by the tips of their fingers to defeat Mansfield Lake Ridge 21-20 on Friday night at Billy Goodloe Stadium.
Lake Ridge (1-3, 0-1 District 15-4A) had failed to score on three previous occasions on 4th-and-goal, but the fourth time was the charm and gave the Eagles a chance to tie the score in the fourth quarter.
However, Garrett Davis came from the edge to block the attempt and the Hawks (3-1, 1-0) held on.
Red Oak rallied from a 14-0 deficit with 21 unanswered points.
The biggest of those three touchdowns came via Logan Thompson’s second touchdown pass of the game. Thompson connected to a wide-open Travier Jackson for an 81-yard touchdown that proved to be the difference.
Lake Ridge, coming within a point of its first district victory in program history, had an opportunity with less than two minutes to play. Driving inside Red Oak territory, the Eagles failed to convert on 4th-and-11 to assure Red Oak of the victory.
