BURLESON — Crowley quarterback Matt Marner engineered an 11-play, 89-yard touchdown drive late in the fourth quarter to lift the Eagles past Burleson Centennial 42-38 on Friday night in both teams’ District 8-4A opener at Burleson Stadium.
The Eagles (4-0, 1-0) trailed 38-35 with 6:16 to play after regaining possession with an interception at their own 11.
Marner, who completed 16 of 27 passes for 172 yards, hit passes of 10, 18 and 11 yards to move the ball to the Centennial 45.
Running back Daylonzo Freeman carried on the next six plays, including a 10-yard run on fourth-and-1 at the Centennial 25. Two plays later, he scored on 3-yard run for the lead with 2:19 to play.
Freeman finished with 149 yards rushing on 22 carries. Marner carried 14 times for 146 yards.
Centennial (0-4, 0-1) had a chance to tie but turned the ball over on downs, and Crowley ran out the clock.
Trailing 28-24 at halftime, the Spartans regained the lead early in the third quarter on a 33-yard run by DeMarcus Williams. Crowley countered on the next play from scrimmage as Marner raced 75 yards for a score and a 35-31 lead.
Midway through the third quarter, Centennial went up 38-35 on a 43-yard scoring strike from Brady Allen to Davonte Sanders. Allen had a big night for the Spartans, completing 9 of 20 passes for 212 yards and four touchdowns.
With Centennial up 10-7 after one quarter of play and up 24-7 at one point in the second quarter, the teams traded scoring outbursts that saw Crowley hold a 28-24 lead at halftime.
