SAGINAW — Saginaw gave itself a cushion, and the eventual difference, with a touchdown pass as time expired in the first half en route to a 44-37 victory Friday night over Eastern Hills at Rough Rider Stadium.
John Polston completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Austin Wright with no time left to seal the victory. It was Wright’s second touchdown pass of the night from Polston. He also ran in a score from 37 yards.
The score was set up by Maleek Tarver’s 79-yard kickoff return to the Highlanders’ 4. It was a pivotal score for the RoughRiders (3-2, 3-0 District 6-4A) as Eastern Hills (1-3, 1-1) had erased a 31-7 deficit to draw to within 31-23.
Turnovers kept both teams from establishing much of a rhythm. Saginaw lost three fumbles, as did Eastern Hills, but Saginaw’s Jared Rivas also had two interceptions. Bobby Suber came up with two sacks for the RoughRiders and had three tackles for loss.
Eastern Hills was able to stay with the RoughRiders as quarterback Antwjuan Strahan passed for three scores while Marcus Baisy scored on a 52-yard run and caught one of Strahan’s TD passes.
The teams traded scores in the third quarter and just as Saginaw was piecing together a sustained drive, Willie Preston intercepted a Saginaw pass, with just over 4 minutes to play.
Strahan then connected with Cedric Rose for a 57-yard score and the margin was just 44-37. Saginaw controlled the final possession to run out the clock for the win.
