AZLE — Defending 4A Division I state champion Denton Guyer dominated the final three quarters of play against the Azle Hornets, rolling to a 41-10 District 5-4A win Friday night at Hornet Field.
The two defenses slugged it out, holding each other scoreless for the first 10 minutes. But late in the first quarter the Wildcat offense found its rhythm, scoring on a 7-yard carry by quarterback Jerrod Heard, a Texas recruit.
“We didn’t play Guyer football tonight,” coach John Walsh said. “We are better than that and we have to work harder as a team to get going early on.”
Guyer (2-2, 1-0 in District 5-4A), scored 28 points in a little over 6 minutes, taking a 28-0 halftime lead.
Azle (2-2, 0-1) couldn’t find an answer for the Wildcats, who needed just four plays to score on their first drive of the second half.
Heard passed for three TDs and added another on the ground while accounting for 300 yards.
E.J. Salinas scored from 6 yards out for Azle in the fourth quarter.
