The Byron Nelson football team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 47-0 victory over Burleson Centennial and will open district play at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against an always tough Wichita Falls Rider team at Northwest ISD Stadium.

The Bobcats lost to Ryder 50-14 in their district opener in 2012 in Wichita Falls and hopes to return the favor with an impressive showing on Friday.

Nelson got off to a quick start against Centennial in Week 3, when Nick Lynch returned a 74-yard punt for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game.

It was then the defense's turn, as 1:27 seconds later, the Bobcats went up 14-0 on a 33-yard interception return from Bobby Jones.

Nelson scored three times with four minutes to play in the second quarter, the first on a 13-yard turn from Jordan Diamond and the second on an 11-yard run from Jordan Ortiz.

With five seconds left in the first half, Lynch came up big on offense for the Bobcats when Esteban Ortega connected with him on a 22-yard pass to make it 34-0 heading into the break.

Nelson picked up right where it left off in the second half, when Ortega broke a 43-yard touchdown score for the Bobcats.

With no time left on the clock, the defense came through again on a 39-yard fumble return for a touchdown from Skyler Reneau.

Ortega rushed for 117 yards and a touchdown in the game for Nelson.

Nelson has averaged 371 yards of total offense and just under 34 points per game through its first three games of the season, while surrendering just 199 yards per game to opposing offenses.

The Bobcats have the third-ranked defense among area 4A teams heading into the Rider game.

Meanwhile, Ryder is 2-1 heading into the contest with victories over Abilene cooper and Amarillo, and its only loss coming to undefeated 5A team Denton Ryan.

Coach Brian Polk could not be reached for comment.

•  Over at Northwest High School, the Texans will open up district competition at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against Keller at the Keller ISD Athletic Complex.

Northwest defeated Keller 35-7 in its district opener last season en route to its 8-2 record and second-place finish in 4-5A competition.
