Meet the author: Samuel G. Freedman to visit TCU

The rivalry between Grambling State University and Florida A&M and its influence on desegregating college athletics in the South is examined in Breaking the Line by Samuel G. Freedman. Freedman, who is a professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism, will be in Fort Worth at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 30, for a lecture and book signing at Texas Christian University.

Breaking the Line looks at the 1967 college football season and the rivalry between now-iconic coaches Eddie Robinson of Grambling and Jake Gaither of Florida A&M.

Freedman’s visit to TCU kicks off the Schieffer School of Journalism’s Diversity and the Media speaker program. The lecture will be in Moudy North, Room 141, 2805 S. University Drive. Parking will be available at the rear of the Moudy complex. Admission to the lecture is free, but guests must register at

Freedman will sign books immediately after the lecture. Breaking the Line will be available for sale.
