A 40-year-old man, who reportedly was named in federal warrants accusing him of weapons violations, was killed late Thursday afternoon when he was hit by a truck on Southeast Loop 820 in Forest Hill.

Jerald Stepp of Tulsa, Okla., was identified Friday by the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office.

Forest Hill police Chief Dan Dennis said Friday that Stepp “had federal warrants for weapons violations.”

Police were called at 3:50 p.m. to help in what they thought at the time was a foot pursuit in the 5300 block of the loop.

A constable had called officers in Kennedale, and Forest Hill police joined the response, Davis said. Stepp ran into traffic lanes on the freeway and was struck by a tractor-trailer.

“It looks like he ran when he saw all of the officers,” Dennis said. “As I understand it, they weren't chasing him, he just ran, presumably because he thought they were going to stop him.”

Stepp was pronounced dead at the scene. Traffic backed up to Interstate 35W while police investigated the death.
