LAKE WORTH — The Lake Worth Bullfrogs leaned on their defense Friday to preserve a 48-21 homecoming victory against Hillsboro at Kittrell Stadium.
Lake Worth (3-1) forced four Hillsboro turnovers and scored on three of the ensuing possessions. Linebacker Luis Gutierrez led the way with three sacks, four tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery.
The Bullfrogs put their stamp on the game early. Two of Lake Worth’s three first-half scores came on the heels of interceptions. Dennis Ralon’s interception with just over four minutes left in the second quarter led to quarterback Kelton Versey’s 1-yard touchdown run three plays later.
Versey, who ran for three touchdowns and threw for another, finished with 139 yards rushing on 25 carries and passed for 147 yards.
Tray White picked off another Hillsboro pass near midfield late in the first half and Lake Worth scored three plays later on a 12-yard pass from Versey to Bryce Merriman for a 21-7 halftime lead.
Merriman caught four passes for 91 yards and a score, and running back Tim Woods added 78 yards on seven carries, two for touchdowns.
