LEWISVILLE — Arlington was on target on fourth-down conversions throughout Friday’s pre-district finale against Lewisville, going 3-for-3 through the first three quarters of the game.
However, the Colts couldn’t cash in on the one that mattered most in the fourth quarter, losing to the Farmers 14-10.
With fourth-and-2 on the Arlington 44, Colts coach Scott Peach called for the same play that had worked so many times on third- and fourth-down conversions, a quarterback keeper by Michael Gray.
That final time with 3:25 left in the game, Lewisville came out on top, as senior linebacker Joe Head brought Gray down for no gain.
“You want Michael Gray to have the football in his hands,” Peach said. “We were going to go down, if we were going down, with the ball in No. 2’s hands and they made the stop.”
Arlington (1-2) found itself in that come-from-behind position after a 3-yard touchdown run by sophomore running back Donte McGee.
The score was set up after a punt by Gray from the Arlington 5-yard line hung in a strong north wind, and fell right back on the line of scrimmage.
Arlington looked to have held Lewisville (2-2) to a field goal, sacking quarterback Matt McDougal on the Colts 14 on third down, but an excessive celebration flag was thrown, giving the Farmers a first down on the Arlington 7.
“It’s not fair to our kids,” Peach said of the call.
Arlington seemed in control throughout the first three quarters and had a 10-7 halftime lead. The Colts finished with 317 total yards to Lewisville’s 123.
“We played great defense and took care of the ball offensively, but they won the field position game in the fourth quarter,” Peach said.
“They got the field position battle down there and ended up scoring on it.”
