There have been growing pains through the first weeks of the TCU volleyball team’s season.

However, the team seems to have turned the corner on its maturation process.

TCU coasted through the tournament it hosted last weekend, picking up four wins that adds to a five-game win streak.

The climax of that streak came in the form of a 3-2 win over Ole Miss in the Horned Frogs’ final match of the tournament.

TCU coach Prentice Lewis said she can see her team developing into her system.

“They’re grasping a lot of the concepts we’re asking them to and are executing,” Lewis said. “Now it’s just doing it every single play. We’ve got to get to one point before we can move on, and I feel like they’re one of those teams that I’ve been able to put stuff in very quickly and they’ve been able to get a good grasp of it.”

TCU has one more tournament, the Spartan Spiketacular in Greensboro, N.C., before hitting the Big 12 Conference schedule,

Lewis hopes her team fine-tunes a few fundamentals, such as reading defenses and not losing opposing attackers when blocking, before facing Texas in the first conference game.

“Develop and improve are the two keywords that we’re going to be working on,” Lewis said. “We’re going to use this weekend as — how do you get better at things that I’ve been talking about.”

TCU opens the tournament against North Carolina Central on Friday, then battles George Mason and UNC Greensboro in a Saturday doubleheader.

Soccer soph shines

It’s easy to see that TCU soccer sophomore midfielder Makenzie Koch is playing with a certain determination.

Koch leads the team in goals and points, finding the back of the net four times this season and tallying 11 points.

All of this comes a year removed from a knee injury (torn anterior cruciate ligament) that ended Koch’s freshman season after one game of Big 12 play.

It’s obvious to coach Eric Bell that Koch is just continuing where she left off last season before she suffered the injury.

Playing in just 10 of TCU’s 21 games last season, Koch had three goals and five assists, finishing fourth on the team in points with 11.

Bell said Koch has not let the injury set her back any this season.

“I feel like she’s in a really good spot. She’s playing with a lot of confidence and has been really dynamic in the attack for us and has been giving us a lot of different options to help us score goals,” Bell said.

Koch and the Horned Frogs have two more games before conference play begins, both home matches against Denver and Central Arkansas.

The Horned Frogs then face Texas and give Koch her first real opportunity to lead TCU through Big 12 play.
