Bob Ray Sanders’ Wednesday column on the Washington Navy Yard shooting (“Latest mass shooting will have one major result”) was typical of the anti-gun faction. His proposed “assault rifle” ban and universal background checks (universal gun registration) would not have prevented this tragedy.

Only recognition by the police departments of Seattle, Fort Worth and Newport, R.I., that this man was a threat to himself and others would have.

If we want to reduce mass shootings, we must do two things: (1) identify those who are likely to commit such crimes and intervene, and (2) stop giving so much news coverage to their actions, which only encourages others of like mind.
