The Dallas Cowboys signed defensive tackle David Carter, released by the Arizona Cardinals after training camp, and added receiver Jamar Newsome to the practice squad after working out six players Tuesday.

To make room for Carter on the 53-man roster, they released defensive tackle Landon Cohen. To put Newsome on the practice squad, the Cowboys released 2012 draft pick Danny Coale.

Carter (6-foot-5, 294 pounds) was released Aug. 30 by the Cardinals. He was their sixth-round pick in 2011 out of UCLA. He played in 32 games with 18 tackles, one sack, two pressures and a forced fumble. He started four games last season.

Newsome (6-1, 201) has played in eight games over two years, with Jacksonville in 2011 and Kansas City in 2012. He made two starts for the Chiefs last season. He has five career catches for 73 yards.

The other players who worked out Tuesday were cornerbacks Ryan Steed, Junior Mertile and Peyton Thompson and wide receiver Dwight Jones.

The Cowboys might not be through signing players. They remain thin at corner, with only four on the active roster, and starter Morris Claiborne has a shoulder injury. He was in on only 37 snaps against Kansas City.

Waters key to running

Owner Jerry Jones isn’t worried about the running game. He believes it will improve for a number of reasons, including the addition of Brian Waters to the starting lineup.

Waters, who signed with the Cowboys on Sept. 3 after sitting out last season, played 18 offensive snaps Sunday.

“I think it will be [improved],” Jones said of the running game on his weekly radio show on KRLD FM. “We thought Waters played good for the numbers of snaps he came in there. So Waters will be in there. That’ll improve us if you want to look at personnel.”

The Cowboys vowed to run it more and run it better this season after having the fewest rushing yards in team history for a 16-game season a year ago. They had 87 yards on 23 carries against the Giants in the season opener and ran for 37 yards on 16 carries against the Chiefs.

Five times in the past 12 games the Cowboys have rushed for fewer than 50 yards. They have not had a 100-yard rusher since Murray rushed for 131 in the 2012 season opener against the Giants.

Jones insists the Cowboys will run it more and run it better.

A different kind of 1-1

The Cowboys are back at 1-1, the same way they’ve started the season five years in a row.

But in Jerry Jones’ mind, it’s not the same old 1-1, because the Cowboys are doing things differently on offense.

“If you look at personnel, you’re tied in to what we’re basically doing offensively, I think we’re not the same team we were last year,” Jones said Tuesday on his radio show.

And what has changed with the Cowboys’ play-calling since Bill Callahan took over?

“You’re going to see more play-action passes. You haven’t seen it, but you’re going to see more,” Jones said. “You’re going to see more zone blocking. You’re going to see emphasizing tight ends more.”
