The Byron Nelson volleyball team started the district season with a bang last week, defeating Azle 3-0 and doing so in impressive fashion.The Lady Bobcats played Guyer on Tuesday after the press deadline and will square off with Denton on Friday at 6 p.m. at Nelson High School.“With Denton, (they’re) a team that I really feel we can beat if we play our game,” Pacheco said. “I feel like if we play the way we did this last Friday against Azle, we should have a good game against Denton as well.”Nelson defeated Azle 25-14, 25-12, 25-20 on Friday, and Pacheco said her team accomplished exactly what it set out to do in the game with the Lady Hornets.“We went in there pretty focused and ready for the district season,” Pacheco said. “We knew that we were going to have to jump on them early and not let them go on any type of streak, and I felt like our players did a really job of doing that.”Pacheco said she did have a standout performance in the game as well. “As a team, we had a season high of six aces,” Pacheco said. “Haley Tippett, our junior outside hitter, led us with 14 kills and also led us with 12 digs.”Nelson played in some tough non-district tournaments and faced some stiff competition along the way.The Lady Bobcats took some lumps prior to the start of district play, and Pacheco said she hopes her players understand why the non-district schedule was so difficult.“It was our mantra all season to keep district in mind, and it was to remind everyone of why we were playing such a tough non-district schedule,” Pacheco said. “I think that non-district helped us a lot. It helped us keep focused, and it was very good for us.”• Over at Northwest, the Lady Texans also started off the district season on a high note, defeating Richland 3-0 on Friday night at Northwest High School.The Lady Texans were able to exact a little revenge in the process, as Richland knocked Northwest out of the playoffs last season.Northwest defeated Richland by scores of 25-17, 25-10, and 25-11 to get the victory.The Lady Texans played Haltom on Tuesday night after the press deadline and will take on Keller Central at 5:30 p.m. on Friday at Northwest High School.
