A 20-year-old Justin woman was killed early Sunday when a sports utility vehicle she was driving clipped a utility pole and overturned south of Justin, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper said Sunday.

A 32-year-old passenger in the 2004 GMC Yukon suffered minor injuries in the wreck.

DPS officials identified the victim as Jewel Garcia. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, Dennis Rodriguez, suffered minor injuries, according to DPS reports.

The wreck occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday about two miles south of Justin on Sam Reynolds Road near Farm Road 156. Justin is about 27 miles north of Fort Worth and near Texas Motor Speedway.

Garcia was driving west on the road when for an as-yet undetermined reason she lost control of the SUV, DPS Sgt. Lonny Haschel said Sunday in an email.

“The vehicle left the traveled portion of the roadway and struck a utility pole,” Haschel said. “It then traveled back across the roadway, went through a fence and overturned ejecting the driver.”

Garcia was not wearing a seat belt, according to DPS reports.

Rodriguez was wearing a seat belt, Haschel said.
