The George W. Hawkes Central Library, or the central library downtown, will close Tuesday through Friday for emergency plumbing repairs to the basement.

Pipes in the library’s basement started to leak forcing officials to act quick and funnel water via a pump into a container on Friday.

“We have a big leak in the basement and because of that we’re going to have to shut down everything,” said Sana Syed , a city of Arlington spokeswoman.

No damages have been reported as of Friday night with the exception of some wet carpet, she said.

Arlington’s Facility Services crew won’t be able to make it to the library until Tuesday to replace pipes and gauge the full extent of need repairs.

The “Texas in the Civil War” program planned for 6:30-8 p.m. Thursday will be relocated to the City Council Chambers at 101 W. Abram St. All other programs will be canceled.

Items held for patron reserves will be relocated to Woodland West Branch Library at 2837 W. Park Row Monday night. The Northeast, East and Woodland West Branch libraries will be open until 9 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and until 6 p.m. on Friday for convenience.

Reserve items will be returned to the Central Library Sept. 21.
