NORTH RICHLAND HILLS — Saginaw Boswells defense and its rushing offense helped pull off a 14-9 upset of favored Birdville on Friday night in a District 6-4A matchup at the BISD Fine Arts/Athletics Complex.
Boswell running back Antoine Stevenson led the way, rushing for 130 yards and a touchdown, with help in the ground game from Pioneers quarterback Drew Bicknell (14 carries, 58 yards).
Boswell improved to 1-2 overall, 1-0 in 6-4A. Birdville dropped to 2-1, 0-1.
Birdvilles offense put up numbers but few points in the loss. The Hawks were led by Xavier Turner (35 carries, 190 yards) and Will Hayward (74 yards, one touchdown).
Stevenson and Bicknell marched Boswells offense down the field for their first score on a nine-play, 64-yard drive, capped by a 5-yard Bicknell run.
The Pioneers defense contained the Hawks, recovering a fumble on a missed exchange between Hayward and Turner in the red zone, holding Birdville scoreless in the first half and setting the stage for an upset.
With 4:38 left in the fourth quarter, Turner attempted to carry Birdville by converting on third-and-8 on a broken play. However, the Hawks could not keep the drive alive.
On fourth-and-6, Hayward threw a pass just out of reach of his intended target, turning the ball over on downs with 1:30 remaining.
