MANSFIELD — Granbury’s Jacob Rose kicked a 22-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining to give the Pirates a 44-41 victory against Mansfield Lake Ridge in a nondistrict game Friday night at R.L. Anderson Stadium.
Rose kicked field goals of 37, 25 and 22 yards for Granbury (3-0), which overcame a three-point halftime deficit to take a 41-34 lead. But Eagles (1-1) running back Duke Carter (19 carries, 142 yards and two touchdowns) tied the game on a 3-yard run with 3:05 to go in the fourth quarter.
Ryan Suitt, who passed for 360 yards and a touchdown and ran for three scores, connected with Nick Doughty (seven catches for 167 yards) on a 43-yard pass for a first down at the Lake Ridge 31.
Rose attempted a 46-yard field goal, but a 15-yard penalty for running into the kicker was assessed against the Eagles.
That gave Granbury a first down at the 15. Suitt ran 2 yards on third down to set up first-and-goal at the 5 with 29 seconds remaining.
The Pirates let the clock run down to 8 seconds then called a timeout. Rose came on for the 22-yard try, splitting the uprights.
Jett Duffey passed for 279 yards and three touchdowns and ran for a score in a losing effort.
His 51-yard scoring pass to Savaughn Anderson gave the Eagles a 34-31 lead late in the third quarter.
But Suitt responded with an 11-yard touchdown run in the final minute of the third quarter to put the Pirates back ahead 38-34.
