ARLINGTON — Arlington Seguin held off a late rally to beat Arlington Sam Houston 46-37 on Friday.
With Seguin (2-1) clinging to a 40-37 lead, running back Darrian Hammonds broke free for a 64-yard touchdown run to pad the Cougars’ lead with 4:10 left in the game.
Sam Houston (1-2) had scored two touchdowns within a little over a minute. Quarterback Ervin Hill ran in one score, and after Sam Houston recovered an onside kick, Daylan Woods ran for another touchdown.
Hammonds led Seguin with 238 rushing yards and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Kelton Moore rushed for 198 yards and scored three touchdowns, including one in the fourth quarter to put the Cougars ahead 40-23.
The teams traded offensive punches in the first half as Seguin entered halftime with 322 yards while Sam Houston had 199 yards.
Seguin took a 21-16 lead with 4:09 left in the second quarter when Hammonds scored on a 10-yard touchdown run. Seguin padded its lead with 13 seconds left when Moore connected with Malcolm Rogers on a 12-yard touchdown pass.
Rontavion Hickson and Lloyd Maroney had interceptions for Seguin.
