Height: 5-11 Weight: 199 Season:
Charles is a game-breaker. The former track star ran a 4.38 at the combine in 2008. He is elusive in the open field and a dangerous cutback runner. Charles has topped 1,000 yards three times in his first five seasons, with a career-high of 1,509 a year ago. In Andy Reid’s West Coast offense, Charles’ carries could go down, but he likely will be used more as a receiver than in the past. He is expected to top his career high of 45 catches in a season. Charles runs hard and shows toughness. Weaknesses:
The question about Charles coming out of college was how he would hold up physically. He tore his ACL in a Sept. 21, 2011, game against the Detroit Lions. Charles played all 16 games last season, but he left Sunday’s game against Jacksonville early with a quad contusion. He had only seven games with 20 or more carries at UT. In 66 career NFL games, Charles has 13 games of 20-plus carries. Because of his size, he still is most effective running to the edges rather than up the middle. He has only 18 rushing touchdowns and seven receiving touchdowns in his career. Last week:
He had 77 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries and caught three passes for 23 yards before leaving with a quad contusion in the Chiefs’ 28-2 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played 36 of 65 snaps. Who has to stop him?
The Cowboys’ front seven will have its hands full with Charles. Middle linebacker Sean Lee and weakside linebacker Bruce Carter could have a lot of tackles. The Cowboys stripped Giants running back David Wilson twice Sunday and recovered both fumbles. Charles has a history of fumbles with 11 lost in his career, including three last season. Notable:
He is a two-time Pro Bowler. …Since 2010, Charles averages 110.8 rush yards per game vs. the NFC. …Charles averages 108.5 scrimmage yards per game since 2012, which is the best in the AFC. …Charles is a Port Arthur native. …Charles has two career games with at least 230 rushing yards. Only Jim Brown, with three, has more in NFL history. Charles also has a 226-yard game. …Charles was a third-round pick in 2008.
