BURLESON — It took three overtimes and nearly four hours for Mansfield Lake Ridge to claim its first victory in school history, 77-75 over Burleson Centennial in a nondistrict game Friday night at Burleson Stadium.
After Centennial scored on a 5-yard run by DeMarcus Williams in the third overtime to give the Spartans a 75-69 lead, the Eagles defense swarmed over Williams on the 2-point conversion attempt.
Lake Ridge (1-0) scored on the next play when Jett Duffey hit Jalyn Hernandez for a 25-yard touchdown pass. Duke Carter scored on the 2-point conversion to give the Eagles their first win. Lake Ridge, which opened last fall, went 0-10 in 2012.
Duffey had a big night, completing 13 of 22 passes for 348 yards and five touchdowns. Hernandez caught five passes for 179 yards and four scores.
In the first overtime, Centennial scored on a 13-yard run by Williams, and Lake Ridge countered with a 6-yard pass from Duffey to Hernandez on third-and-goal.
Lake Ridge needed three plays to score in the second overtime as Carter broke free for a 17-yard run.
Centennial tied things at 69-69 with a 27-yard scoring toss from Brady Allen to Davonte Sanders. Allen threw for 244 yards and four scores. Williams carried 27 times for 212 yards. Sanders caught four passes for 89 yards and Curtis Amos caught four passes for 116 yards.
The teams ended regulation tied at 55-55 after a 27-yard field by Ron Reid with 37 seconds to play in the game. The kick countered a 44-yard run by Lake Ridge quarterback Jett Duffey on fourth-and-14 with Centennial leading 52-47.
The first half was a wild one as the Spartans and Eagles traded blows toward combining for 73 points and 627 yards on 69 plays (9.1 yards per play).
