Davis well-qualified

After his defeat in the Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is not qualified to comment on Wendy Davis’ race.

Contrary to Dewhurst, Davis is hardly a one-issue candidate. Her accomplishments as a single parent and her Harvard law degree are indicative of her strengths in representing women’s rights and the need for better education.

Also, she has championed the cause against the Republican leadership’s attack on public education, food and medical care for children and concern for the poorest among us.

Texas’ Republican leadership has only provided lower taxes for major corporations and less financial support for our children, our veterans, our sick and elderly. Lower taxes for the rich, lower wages for the poor — the Republican way.

Wendy Davis is well-qualified to challenge these choices. And one office that is vulnerable for Republicans is lieutenant governor — Dewhurst — where the real power of statewide office resides.

I look forward to a Democrat controlling the Texas Senate after next year. So should the rest of us wage earners.
