A man was fatally shot Friday afternoon at an apartment complex on the north side, police said.

The shooting was reported about 5:15 p.m. in the 1800 block of Northwest 20th Street. The apartments are on a bluff overlooking Jacksboro Highway, not far from North Side High School.

The victim was a Hispanic man in his mid-20s, but officers did not know his name, said officer Sharron Neal, a police spokeswoman.

Officers did not immediately find anyone who witnessed the shooting, Neal said.

Jessica Herrera, who lives at a nearby apartment complex, said she heard a shot.

“I was just sitting on my steps, and then I heard a big pop,” she said.

Police arrived 10 minutes later, she said.

Joann Stephens said she has lived in the neighborhood since the 1970s. The area has crime, she said, but she was not aware of anything happening in the complex where the man was shot.

“We were here when they built those,” she said. “I remember schoolteachers used to live up there, and some of my friends lived there.”

Police were combing the neighborhood for witnesses, Neal said.
