A race on a Fort Worth highway apparently sparked a one-car wreck late Thursday night that killed a 29-year-old Fort Worth man, police officials said Friday.

Witnesses had called 911 reporting that a silver 2004 Chevrolet and another vehicle were racing east in the 3000 block of East Interstate 20, according to Tracey Knight, a police spokeswoman.

Near Wichita Street, witnesses told police, the speeding Chevy driver made an unsafe movement and struck the south guard wall.

The Chevy rolled several times, ejecting the driver in the process, before coming to a rest, Knight said.

The driver, identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office as Jamel Mays, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Knight said the other vehicle believed involved in the race did stop after the crash and provided a statement to police, Knight said.

The wreck remains under investigation, she said.
