FRISCO — Led by senior quarterback Esteban Ortega, Trophy Club Nelson jumped out to a 14-0 first-quarter lead and raced to a 38-13 victory over Frisco on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Ortega either ran or handed the ball to running back Courtney Miles as Nelson (2-0) used its read-option offense to gain 357 yards rushing. Miles rushed for 175 on 22 carries.
“We got a good job up front on the offensive line, led by senior Anders Huizenga,” Nelson coach Brian Polk said. “And we cut down on the fumbles and penalties that hurt us in our first game.”
It was a fumble recovery that sparked Nelson’s first drive, which was capped with a 12-yard pass from Ortega to De’Shaun Diggs with 7:43 left in the first quarter.
Ortega showed his versatility by completing 7 of 11 passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns. His second TD pass came late in the game on a 5-yard connection with Jordan Diamond.
Miles scored twice on runs of 3 and 20 yards, while Ortega added a 1-yard score.
In spite of the lopsided score, Frisco showed strength on offense behind the running of quarterback Jake Battaglia and halfbacks Max Steitle and Lucas Reynolds.
Two lost fumbles on Frisco’s first two drives proved to be too much to overcome.
Nelson plays Burleso Centennial next week in its home opener.
