WEATHERFORD — Cleburne got off to a slow start as Weatherford built an early 14-point lead, but the Yellow Jackets dominated the second half en route to a 54-35 win at Kangaroo Stadium.
The Kangaroos (0-2) led 14-0 after scoring on their first tow possessions. Grant Werts scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and then threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Chris Whitling.
The Kangaroos’ defense, meanwhile, held the Jackets without a first down in the opening quarter.
Cleburne (1-1) scored when Reggie Robinson II returned a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown. The Roos, however, rebuilt their 14-point lead on a 29-yard pass from Werts to Whitling with 22 seconds left in the first quarter.
Cleburne’s Kameron Pickett scored on a 7-yard pass from Brian Baca early in the second quarter.
After the teams exchanged punts, Weatherford’s Trey Rich missed a 40-yard field goal attempt, and the Jackets marched 67 yards to tie the game 21-21 at halftime on a 33-yard touchdown pass from Baca to Johnny Juarez.
Darion McCullough scored on a 68-yard run on Cleburne’s first possession of the second half and the Jackets pulled away with a 19-point third quarter.
