ARLINGTON — Ta’Varius Luke and Corey Hunt combined to rush for 483 yards and four scores as North Mesquite beat Arlington Sam Houston 49-24 in a nondistrict game Thursday night at Wilemon Field.
North Mesquite (2-0) moved the ball on all six of its first half possessions but led by only four at halftime because of two lost fumbles and a missed field goal.
Sam Houston (1-1) took a 17-14 lead with 1:15 remaining before the half when Alexis Alvarez kicked a 32-yard field goal. The lead would only last 59 seconds, however.
Cody Williams passed 21 yards to Pat Mobley with 16 seconds remaining before the half as North Mesquite went ahead 21-17. The drive started at midfield and North Mesquite needed seven plays.
Sam Houston scored first. Bernard Lewis recovered a fumble at the North Mesquite 45 on the opening series. Two plays later, Darrion Flowers scored on a 6-yard run to give Sam Houston a 7-0 lead with 7:59 remaining in the first quarter.
North Mesquite answered with an 11-play, 75 yard drive and tied the game at 7 with 3:08 remaining in the first quarter when Luke scored on a 23-yard run.
North Mesquite went ahead 14-7 with 9:27 remaining in the second quarter when Hunt scored on an 11-yard run.
Kailon Harris recovered a fumble at the Sam Houston 5 to stall a North Mesquite scoring drive. Two plays later, quarterback Ervin Hill raced 90 yards for the score to tie it at 14 with 4:59 remaining in the second quarter.
North Mesquite rushed 56 times for 532 yards and amassed 699 total yards and 34 first downs. Williams completed 11 of 18 passes for 166 yards and two scores.
Hill accounted for 262 of Sam Houston’s 368 total yards.
