New York Jets rookie Geno Smith will start at quarterback in Sunday’s season opener against the Buccaneers and coach Rex Ryan confirmed that Mark Sanchez will not play after suffering a shoulder injury in the preseason.

Briefly

• Bengals: Former Southlake Carroll quarterback Greg McElroy, cut last week by the Jets, was signed to Cincinnati’s practice squad.

• Buccaneers: Former TCU receiver Skye Dawson, an undrafted free agent cut last weekend by the Redskins, was among 10 players at a tryout Tuesday for Tampa Bay.

• Bills: Dan Carpenter, who has spent time with three other teams in the last month, will handle kicking duties for Buffalo on Sunday after sixth-round pick Dustin Hopkins was sidelined with a right groin strain.

• Texans: Rookie guard David Quessenberry, a sixth-round pick from San Jose State, suffered a broken foot in Wednesday’s practice and will miss the entire season.
