TCU’s vaunted secondary was subpar against LSU, Patterson says

The strength of the TCU defense is supposed to be its experienced secondary. But coach Gary Patterson wasn’t satisfied with his safeties against the LSU Tigers.

Even Chris Hackett, who had 10 tackles (one shy of his career-best against Oklahoma in 2012) and a sack, feels like the unit needs to play better.

“Taking nothing away from LSU, they’re a good team, they converted a lot of things, but I feel like sometimes we had them stopped and we just gave up on our own,” Hackett said. “You have to tip your hat to them. The quarterback had a lot of good throws he made on the money that we thought we had stopped.”

Patterson said: “He played better than the other two but not at the level if you want to be a top five defense in the nation.

“That’s my standard, not whether they played OK. They were trying to do too much. Trying to make big plays [instead] of doing [their] job. All of them were guilty of that. They did not play very well.”

Special teams boost

True freshmen Sammy Douglas and Denzel Johnson should see more playing time on special teams this week.

Gary Patterson wants to see more athleticism on the unit. Johnson played a little against LSU but Douglas, who attended Arlington High, did not see any action.

“I never want to put someone in the game if they’re not ready to go do that,” Patterson said. “He wasn’t ready to go play in that ballgame. He had a better practice this week.

“We just need more athletic people [on special teams]. We need to see if he can do it.”

Ticket update

About 3,000 tickets remain for TCU’s game against Southeastern Louisiana at 11 a.m. Saturday at Amon G. Carter Stadium.

Just standing-room only tickets remain for the Frogs’ Sept. 28 game against SMU. Those tickets will be available at 8 a.m. Sept. 23 online, by phone, or at the TCU ticket office.

The Texas game Oct. 26 is sold out with SRO tickets to be available Oct. 21.

Injury update

• Free safety Elisha Olabode, who suffered an unspecified injury early in August camp is “better than he’s been in three weeks,” Gary Patterson said.

• True freshman receiver Ty Slanina hurt his ankle against LSU but has practiced this week and is 75 to 80 percent, Patterson said.

Key stat

13/19Third down conversions for LSU against TCU. The Frogs led the Big 12 and ranked seventh nationally in 2012 holding opponents to a 29.95 conversion rate.

Quotable

“They’re going to see all kinds of things. Every formation known to man and then some. Tackles at the wide. Quarterbacks standing with the two guards. Four or five wideouts, live motions everywhere. It’ll be a lot of fun.” —TCU coach Gary Patterson on what his defense will see against Southeastern Louisiana
