At Friday’s Kangaroo Kickoff Luncheon, the excitement was palpable.Speeches from Weatherford head football coach Weldon Nelms and WISD Executive Director of Athletics Richard Scoggin fired up an already anxious crowd as a “new era” in Weatherford was set to begin later that night.Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, the Richland Rebels didn’t get the memo and spoiled Weatherford’s chances of an opening night win with a 46-14 victory. Richland quarterback Brandon Maines and running back CJ Hicks connected on the Rebels’ first offensive possession for a 16-yard touchdown and never looked back. Maines would finish the night with close to 200 yards and two touchdowns. Weatherford’s senior quarterback Grant Werts finished 10-for-22 and 168 yards, 42 on a pass to Logan Guest for a score as time expired. The Roos get a chance to take their frustrations out on Cleburne Friday as the Yellowjackets visit Kangaroo Stadium for Weatherford’s home opener. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.
