Police arrested a 20-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his 38-year-old mother Monday night.

Melanie Spencer died at 9:45 p.m. in the emergency room of Medical Center of Arlington, according to the Tarrant County medical examiner’s website. She was shot at her home in the 3600 block of Montridge Court in Arlington and transported to the hospital via ambulance.

Spencer’s son, Johnathan Peter Lannon of Arlington, was taken into custody at the crime scene and is facing a murder charge and two counts of aggravated assault for pointing the gun at his grandparents, according to police.

The grandparents were at Spencer’s home at the time of the shooting.

Early details in the investigation indicate that about 9:15 p.m., Arlington police received a 911 call from a woman worried that her relative had a gun, said Tiara Richard, Arlington police spokeswoman.

When police officers arrived, they found the woman with a gunshot wound, Richard said.
