The Nelson volleyball team had a solid showing at the Arlington Invitational Tournament this past weekend, and coach Libby Pacheco said she thinks her team is making good progress early on in the season. The Lady Bobcats will square off with Frisco Centennial at 6:30 p.m. on Friday at Nelson High School, and Pacheco said she believes it will be a good warm-up to district, which starts the following week.“We were able to scrimmage Frisco Centennial, and I know they have some really strong players,” Pacheco said. “They are going to be a really good and tough match for us this week.”Pacheco said she was satisfied for the most part with how her team performed at the Arlington Invitational Tournament this past weekend, and said that it really gave her an opportunity to evaluate where her team stands moving forward.“It is a really competitive tournament, and it was kind of our last chance to get everything ready before our regular season starts,” Pacheco said. “I feel like we were able to figure out some things and get comfortable with each other on the court. I felt like we played pretty competitively throughout the tournament.”Nelson went 3-3 overall in the competition, and Pacheco said she had a couple of players perform especially well.“We had great play from our middle blocker, Elizabeth Pennington,” Pacheco said. “Our setter, Delaney Duis, also did a great job for us in the tournament.”Pacheco said she does have some concerns as the team prepares to open up district play, but said that generally speaking, the Lady Bobcats are headed in the right direction.“I feel like we are having a lot of up-and-down performances,” Pacheco said. “That is not too uncommon for a team like ours, because we are putting a lot of new faces on the court this year. We're still playing inconsistently, but I think we are improving every day, and that is always what you want to see coming into district.”Nelson opens up district on Sept. 17 at Denton Guyer.Lady Texans do well at Arlington InvitationalThe Northwest volleyball team also competed in the Arlington Invitational Tournament this past weekend and had a good showing overall. The Lady Texans defeated Colleyville Heritage, Mansfield Lake Ridge, Arlington Seguin and Mansfield Timberview in tournament competition.Northwest will take on Brewer at Brewer High School at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, and will open up district competition on Sept. 13 at home against Richland.
