MATA Free Kids Play Day set

The Mansfield Area Tennis Association will hold its annual free kids play day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the APEX Indoor Tennis Courts facility at 1741 Commerce Drive.

The event is being billed as a “festival of tennis activities,” including face and tennis ball painting, station drills, 10-and-under free play and more.

Parents are welcome to play at the event, which is open to the public.

Timberview impressive in victory over Summit

The Timberview football team defeated Summit on Friday night by a score of 49-14, and led 42-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Timberview scored on three Nicholas James touchdown runs, as well as runs from Tevin Muse and Mason Miller with a combined total of 254 yards on the ground.

The Wolves defense came up big as well, as Myron Gailliard scored on a 50-yard touchdown return and Edward Paris had a 67-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Summit answered in the fourth quarter with a touchdown run from Jerrell Peterson and a touchdown pass from Lane Schwab to Johnson Urbani, but it was too late to get back in the game.

Timberview will play Hebron at 7 p.m. on Thursday at Vernon Newsom Stadium, while Summit takes on South Oak Cliff at 7:30 p.m. this Friday at R.L. Anderson Stadium.

Weith, Castillo win Marcus Invitational, Legacy finishes Top Five on both sides

Legacy distance runner Jake Weith won the 4A division of the Marcus Invitational this past weekend, finishing the race with a time of 16:57:00.

Teammate Christian Oldham finished 12th in the race with a time of 18:28.00, and the Legacy boys finished fourth overall as a team.

On the girls side, Maria Castillo brought home an individual championship for Legacy with a time of 20:06:00, while teammate Tiffany Miller finished third with a time of 20:34.00.

Legacy finished third on the girls side as a team.

Mansfield boys golf team ranked first in state

The Mansfield boys team appear to be the team to beat among 5A golf programs in Texas this school year, as the Tigers are at the top of the list, ahead of the likes of Southlake Carroll, Conroe The Woodlands and San Antonio Reagan.

The rankings are according to the recently introduced Texas High School Golf Scoreboard web site at

Andre Garcia and Luke Neeley are ranked second and fourth on the individual list, respectively.

Mansfield/Summit football game to be televised

The MISD's longest running rivalry will be televised this season, giving fans who cannot make the game the opportunity to watch.

The Mansfield vs. Summit game on Sept. 13 will be televised on TXA 21 and air at 10:30 p.m.
