Cowboys trade Lissemore as roster moves continue

The Dallas Cowboys finalized, for now, their 53-man roster Sunday with a trade and waiver claim, while also signing eight players to the practice squad.

The team traded veteran defensive lineman Sean Lissemore to the San Diego Chargers for a seventh-round pick and claimed linebacker Kyle Bosworth off waivers from the New York Giants to fill Lissemore’s spot on the roster.

Lissemore signed a three-year contract extension with the Cowboys last September with thoughts of being a part of the team’s future.

But that was before the Cowboys switched to the 4-3 defense in the off-season.

Lissemore, an active end in the 3-4, proved to be a non-factor as a tackle in the 4-3 throughout training camp and the preseason — a huge disappointment considering the depth concerns the team had because of injuries.

Lissemore was passed on the depth chart by Nick Hayden and Ben Bass. Landon Cohen, who signed with the team after the start of training camp, also proved to be more active in practice and games.

The move for Bosworth was all about upgrading the special teams.

The Cowboys have struggled on special teams throughout the preseason, especially on kickoff and punt coverage.

Bosworth spent the first three years of his career as a special teams performer with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He has 15 career tackles on special teams.

Bosworth played at UCLA and is the nephew of former Oklahoma star Brian Bosworth.

Quarterback Alex Tanney cleared waivers after being cut Saturday, and the Cowboys added him to their practice squad Sunday. The Cowboys kept only two quarterbacks — Tony Romo and Kyle Orton — on their active roster.

Dallas also signed receiver Danny Coale, receiver Tim Benford, guard Ray Dominguez, safety Jakar Hamilton, linebacker Cameron Lawrence, cornerback Micah Pellerin and defensive end Jason Vega to their practice squad.

The Cowboys had hoped to sign linebacker Brandon Magee to the practice squad, but he was claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Browns. Dallas, however, is freed from the $70,000 guarantee they had on his contract.
