KELLER — Esteban Ortega connected on a 35-yard touchdown pass to Hayden Saunders early in the fourth quarter as Trophy Club Nelson rallied for a 16-13 win at Keller ISD Athletic Complex.
Courtney Miles jump-started the Nelson offense late in the first quarter with a 27-yard run to set up the Bobcats at the Timber Creek 43. Miles finished off the drive on the next play, covering the distance on a 43-yard touchdown run to open the scoring.
A high snap on a punt attempt resulted in a 37-yard loss for Timber Creek early in the second. Nelson took over at the Falcons’ 25-yard line, but Timber Creek ended the threat with a fumble recovery on its own 16.
Amon Lindsey switched the field position for Timber Creek by starting the next series with a 45-yard run to the Nelson 39. The Falcons advanced to the 5-yard line, but Jailen Garrett sacked Timber Creek’s Anthony Millsap for a 12-yard loss on third down.
Timber Creek tried a pass on a fake field goal with 1:07 left before halftime, but the Bobcats stuffed the play for a 4-yard loss and maintained a 7-0 lead.
The Falcons opened the second half with a quick scoring drive. Amon Lindsey broke free for a 57-yard run to the Nelson 6-yard line. He ran in for a 6-yard touchdown on the next play to tie the game at 7 two minutes into the third quarter.
Timber Creek recovered a fumble on the following kickoff at the Bobcats’ 9-yard line. The play set up Benji Martinez’s 20-yard field goal to give the Falcons their first lead of the night.
Martinez added a 21-yard field goal with 11:11 left to play to put the Falcons up 13-7.
